APPLICATION: CARGO SCANNING MACHINES
Cargo scanning is carried out in ports of entry and involves inspecting shipping containers. The primary target is nuclear materials, but other contraband such as weaponry, drugs, bombs, and stowaways can also be detected. Previously, containers were spot checked, manually by hand. Since 9/11, the Department of Homeland Security is trying to achieve 100% container review using massive x-ray machines, as our ports are considered to be the weakest link in our border control.
The units resemble scanners used in airport security. A linear particle accelerator creates a high energy beam that can penetrate up to 16" of steel. A single machine can process up to 140 containers in a day. Any exceptionally dense or suspicious material found in the scanner is then investigated by opening the container.
Our customer makes heat exchangers for cooling the x-ray tubes. They needed a low flow solution to send a signal to shut down the x-ray function if there was insufficient flow in the cooling circuit. The customer had SWKs in use elsewhere and was pleased with their performance. However, the SWK was not listed for the flow range needed. We were contacted for a solution and were pleased to manufacture a special version of the SWK customized to the exact range needed for their application.
The KOBOLD SWK flowmeter and flow switch operates on the suspended-float principle, but without the use of a conical measuring tube. A float moves in the direction of flow against the force of a spring in a cylindrical guide tube. The float contains a permanent magnet, which operates an adjustable setpoint contact mounted on the outside. This flowmeter and switch is compact and can be mounted in any orientation. The SWK is ideally suited for monitoring low flows in applications where low cost and high reliability are critical
